Ever try to shine a little light on something only to find that anything you say is completely overshadowed — possibly by the mind of listeners or readers who effectively place themselves into an eclipse? It happens. Even so, like the sun eclipsed by the moon, if we keep trying then maybe we can get through to those who are receptive.

Today some people experienced a solar eclipse, an image of which is seen here. Interestingly enough, people’s belief systems kicked into high gear today. Associated Press reports that a newspaper in India “advised pregnant women not to go outside during the eclipse to avoid having a blind baby or one with a cleft lip.” Also, “food cooked before the eclipse should be thrown out afterward because it will be impure and those who are holding a knife or ax during the eclipse will cut themselves.”

How’s that for superstition? Reminds me of The Simpsons episode last night where Homer wound up in some country acting as a missionary trying to convert people to Christianity. It was hilarious actually, but I won’t go there…

Instead I’ll leave you with the sage words of Mr. Stevie Wonder, from his song Superstition:

“When you believe in things that you don’t understand, then you suffer. Superstition ain’t the way. No, no, no.”
